VFL: Collingwood advance

Collingwood have advanced to a semi-final clash with Sandringham next Sunday after out muscling Werribee in the VFL Legendairy Elimination Final at North Port Oval. The Magpies jumped out of the blocks and held sway for most of the match until Werribee got to within 17 points five minutes into the final quarter before Collingwood steadied to win 13.15.93 to 9.10.64.

The Magpies 29-point win was orchestrated by Patrick Karnezis (18 disposals) who was among the goals again booting a game-high three along with Sam Dwyer who gathered thirty disposals through the midfield and Jarrod Witts (13, 33 hit outs) who dominated in the ruck. Werribee was best served by Scott Sherlock with 27 touches and Ben Speight in his 100th match kicking two goals while Scott McMahon and Brody Mihocek tried hard in defence.

 

VFL: Casey secure final place in top eight with win over Coburg

Casey Scorpions have secured the last place in the Peter Jackson VFL top eight after a 17 point win over Coburg in round 19 at Piranha Park. The win also ended Coburg's late run for a spot in the finals with Nick Carnell (above), the club's longest serving captain, chaired from the field playing his final game at home following the announcement of his retirement at season's end.

Casey led by just four points at three-quarter-time but had the better of the Lions in the last term booting five goals to three to record a 17.9.111 to 14.10.94 win. The Scorpions tall timber providing the firepower up forward with Jake Spencer (19 disposals) and Tim Smith booting four goals each and Mark Jamar three while for Coburg Lachlan Johns kicked three and two each to Daniel Younan and Dion Hill.

VFL: Bombers survive last quarter fightback from Tigers.

Essendon has survived a last quarter comeback from Richmond to win their final home-and-away match of the Peter Jackson VFL season at Windy Hill. Leading by 35 points at the final change, the Bombers were in control, but the Tigers kicked the first five goals of the final term to edge within six points before the home side steadied to win 12.8.80 to 9.9.63.

High flyer Kyle Hardingham booted a game-high three goals for the Bombers and Jacob Thompson and Daniel Willis kicked two each, while for the Tigers, Liam McBean booted two, which was enough to share the ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal with Port Melbourne’s Jordan Lisle and Box Hill’s Sam Grimley with 42 for the year, while Matt McDonough (27 disposals) also kicked two.

VFL: Roosters down Pies in stirring win

North Ballarat have ended Collingwood's unbeaten run at home with a stirring come-from-behind win in round 18 of the Peter Jackson VFL. It was the Magpies first home-and-away loss at Victoria Park since round 11 last year and they now face an uphill battle to make the top four.

Trailing by 25 points at the final change, the Roosters piled on seven goals to two in the final quarter to win 17.15.117 to 17.7.109. Small forward Andrew Hooper finished with a game-high five goals and Nick Couch booted four while North Melbourne listed trio Ryan Bastinac (44 disposals, 18 contested), Trent Dumont (36) and Brad McKenzie (28) starred in the win.
