Box Hill remain on top.
Reigning premiers Box Hill remain on top of the Peter Jackson VFL ladder following a 52-point win over Coburg in their round four Anzac Cup clash at Piranha Park. The Hawks were in control from the outset and ran out easy winners 17.9.121 to 10.9.69. Hawk's ruckman Luke Lowden was awarded the Gibbs-Lines Anzac Day medal for being the best player on the ground. Light drizzle had eased by the start of play as the Hawks quickly asserted their presence kicking four of the first five goals to lead by 22 points at quarter time. Box Hill’s tall timber in Lowden, Tim O'Brien and Sam Grimley provided Coburg defenders with plenty to think about with their mobility and aerial strength.
In the second term James Sicily bagged two goals to keep the momentum flowing for the Hawks. Alex Woodward, returning from injury, was finding the sherrin through the midfield and Jordan Kelly was keeping Hawk's AFL selectors on their toes. Coburg forward, Lech Featherstone, was providing the Lions with a target in attack, while Daniel Venditti and Nathan Thomas were doing their best to keep the home side in it around the ground. The Hawks squandered some chances in the term but held sway at half-time with a 32-point lead.
The cream rose to the top in the third quarter when the Hawks slammed on seven goals to just two behinds from the Lions. First-gamer, Aidan Franetic, helped himself to a couple as the Hawk's slicker ball movement and spread across the park had the Lion’s chasing tail. Defender Angus Litherland even drifted forward to register a rare goal half-way through the quarter. At the final change the margin had been blown out to 76 points. Lion's fans on the terraces were struggling for voice as the chill in the air cooled the beer in their hands. They did find something to cheer about in the last quarter however as Coburg re-grouped to kick five goals whilst holding Box Hill to a late one from Grimley. Featherstone added two and Vendetti scored a well deserved goal to go with his 32 disposal. Coach Peter German could take some heart from the Lion’s last quarter effort against the reigning premiers.
Sicily finished with three for the victors whilst Grimley, Lowden, O’Brien and Franetic all booted two. For Coburg, Featherstone kicked three and Zak Saad two. Better players for Box Hill included medallist Lowden, Kaiden Brand, Marc Lock and Ben Ross whilst for Coburg, Venditti, Thomas, Featherstone and Errol McConnell all worked tirelessly. Box Hill will be looking to extend their unbeaten run at home to Frankston in round five whilst Coburg, searching for their first win, is away to the Northern Blues at Preston City oval.
