VFL: Collingwood back in the eight

Collingwood jumped back into the Peter Jackson VFL top eight after defeating Coburg by 39 points in front of a good crowd at Piranha Park in round seven.The Pies were always in control and a blow-out threatened when their lead got out to 53 points late in the third quarter but Coburg fought the match out eventually going down - 18.13.121 to 11.16.82.

 

Pie’s full forward Michael Still booted a game-high four goals for the third week in a row, receiving good support from busy pair Tim Broomhead (41 disposals) and Patrick Karnezis (31) who each kicked three goals while Ben Kennedy (38) and Ben Moloney (27) provided plenty around the packs. Coburg was well served by Nathan Blair who battled hard in defence; Tom Gleeson (19) was lively around half-forward with two goals while Errol McConnell (8 tackles) and Daniel Venditti (35) worked tirelessly till the end.

 

 

VFL: Hawks back on the winners list

Box Hill has returned to the winners list after a 23-point win over Essendon in round five of Peter Jackson VFL at Windy Hill. Just three points separated the sides at three-quarter-time before the Hawks slammed on six goals to the Bombers two in the last term to edge clear, the final score 18.10.118 to 14.11.95.

The Bombers had their chances late in the match but failed to capitalise booting four behinds in a row. Hawk's skipper David Mirra led the way in defence along with Sam Collins while Jed Anderson was dangerous with a game-high four goals and Liston Trophy winner, Alex Woodward, continues to put his hand up for AFL selection.

 

 

VFL: Bombers move into top 8

Essendon have moved into the top eight after a come-from-behind win to defeat the Northern Blues by eight points at Preston City Oval in round six of Peter Jackson VFL. The Blues led by 25 points at half-time but a seven goal to two last half enabled the Bombers to overtake the Blues winning 11.10.76 to 9.14.68.

 

Former Adelaide Crow Shaun McKernan with 20 disposals including seven clearances and two goals was instrumental in the Bomber’s win along with defender James Gwilt, who nullified Northern’s Matthew Watson for the majority of the game. Gwilt received good support from Ariel Steinberg and the improving Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti who had the job of minding the Blue's small forwards.

 

 

McBean bags five in Tigers thumping of North Ballarat

Richmond have provided Tiger fans with some joy after thumping North Ballarat by 82 points at the ME Bank Centre in round four of Peter Jackson VFL. The Tigers were impressive from the outset with their ball movement and pressure, eventually powering away from the Roosters to win 19.15.129 to 6.11.47.

Tall forwards Liam McBean, five goals, and Tyrone Vickery, 3, impressed as did Matt Dea in defence and Matthew Arnot with 24 disposals. North Ballarat had few winners with defenders Luke Kiel, 22 touches and Matt Austin among their best and midfielders Nick Rippon (27) and Trent Dumont (22, 8 marks) trying hard in a disappointing performance.
