Port Melbourne's in-different year finished abruptly on Saturday when a polished Williamstown team easily disposed of the Borough by 87 points. The match was all but over as early as half-time when the Seagulls led by 50 points. They went berserk in the third quarter piling on twelve goals and at one stage in the final term they led by 110 points!

Western Bulldog AFL-listed player Jason Tutt outstanding with five goals while recently delisted Bulldog, Patrick Veszpremi, booted four. Seagull's ruckman Cameron Wood was instrumental in the win with 27 effective hitouts, however, Wood was reported late in the last quarter for allegedly striking Port Melbourne's Sam Gilmore.

Defender Mark Austin was superb in his efforts to contain Port's 'Frosty' Miller medallist, Dean Galea, to a paltry three possessions and Jack Johnston's shut-down role on Port's Chris Cain was important. The Borough did rally in the final term kicking eight goals but the game had been out of their reach for some time by then. Williamstown kicking 27.14.176 to Port Melbourne 14.5.89 and advance to the Preliminary Final against flag favourites Geelong at North Port Oval.

For Port Melbourne there was little to cheer about for their loyal fans who ventured to the ground after casting their votes in the Federal Election. They were never in the hunt and aside from from former Collingwood player, Julian Rowe, who scored a game-high six goals Marc Johnston and Hugh Sandilands, they looked a tired bunch.

After fighting to hang onto a place in this year's finals, Port disposed of Collingwood in an elimination final but looked well-and-truly below their best against the Seagulls. The loss, their biggest under coach Gary Ayres.
