North Hobart are closer to a home final and securing third spot on the ladder following their ten point win over an inaccurate Glenorchy in round sixteen of TFL football at a sun drenched North Hobart Oval. The Demons had to work hard for the win with the Magpies holding court until early in the third quarter before North grabbed a small buffer. Both sides scored three goals in the final term but it was the Demons who held sway winning 14.11.95 to 11.19.85.
Samuel Caswell was a major contributor for the Demons across half-forward with two goals and creating many others while Adrian Williams was solid in defence repelling many Magpies attacks.
Despite Lachlan Payne’s opening goal of the game for North Hobart the Magpies started the match on the front foot. They kicked the next four goals of the term with Bryce Alomes and Baker Smith worrying the Demon’s defenders in the air. They led by as much as 20-points before a late goal to Jack Wilson for North reduced the deficit to fourteen points at the first change.
North Hobart kicked the first three goals of the second quarter with Thomas Reeves looking dangerous across half forward. Glenorchy continued to miss opportunities with multiple behinds letting their good work running out of half-back go to waste. Harry Bayles was superb with his dash and intercept play out of defence for the Magpies. Glenorchy taking a four point lead into the sheds at the main break.
More inaccuracy from the Pies in the early stages of the second half and when George Downie goaled in the sixth minute the Demons had the lead. The Pies responded with a couple of majors and then a late goal to Caswell saw North take momentum into the final quarter leading by nine points.
Caswell’s second, seven minutes into the final term, gave the home side a margin of fifteen points and when Josch Bingham kicked truly a few minutes later the margin was out to 22-points and it appeared the Demons had finally cooked the Pies. However Glenorchy fought hard and both Alomes and Smith goaled to get them within three points creeping into time-on. North attacked hard in the final minutes and when Wilbur McMurray marked and goaled to give them breathing space their fans on the terraces and Horrie Gorringe Stand let out a sigh of relief.
Along with Caswell and Williams better players for the North Hobart included Reeves, Rory Wright wearing the number 99 who found plenty of the football in the final quarter, defender Harrison McLeod and Josch Bingham in attack. For Glenorchy none better than Bayles in defence and rover Declan Chugg while Blake Waight provided able support for Bayles down back and Theo Ives had a great duel with Demon counterpart James Wilson in the ruck.
Both sides will figure in the elimination final in the first week in September but before that North Hobart face top side Lauderdale away in the penultimate seventeenth round while Glenorchy return to KGV to host bottom side Kingborough.
