Captain coach gets Carlton back on track - Round 13 Premier League Cricket

Carlton recovered to set Fitzroy Doncaster a challenging total after the first day of their round thirteen Premier League clash at Princess Park yesterday. The Blues were in trouble at five for 102 at tea before captain/coach Tim Welsford, unbeaten on 60, and Nicholas Ross (54), combined in a 52 run partnership for the seventh wicket which got the Blues back on track to a competitive total.

Tim Buszard tried his best to hold the middle order together making 36 in a little over two hours whilst down the order Nick Austin's stay at the crease was invaluable to the Blues aiding skipper Welsford in a 45 run partnership lasting just over an hour.

The Lion's medium pacer, Peter Dickson, was the pick of the bowlers with four for 51 off thirty overs, while paceman Jonathan Fagg chipped in with two for 24. Fitzroy Doncaster would have been glad to win the toss and send the Blues in on a scorcher of a day in Melbourne with the temperature hovering around the mid-thirties.

The Lions would have been hoping to skittle Carlton cheaply after a good start but now find themselves with a tricky total to reach next Saturday. Carlton sit sixth on the Premier League ladder just one point and one spot above Fitzroy Doncaster and both teams will be keen to take the honours and stay in touch with those above them.
