After witnessing the thriller at the MCG on Saturday night between Hawthorn and Geelong i ventured to Violet Town in north east Victoria for the  round nine clash in the Kyabram District Football League between Violet Town and Longwood.

Violet Town is the former home to Aussie rock band Killing Heidi brother and sister, Jesse and Ella Hooper. The town was the scene of the Southern Aurora train disaster in 1969 in which nine people lost their lives.

The ‘Towners’ sat fifth on the ladder whilst the out-of-towners, the Longwood Redlegs, were third last with just the one win to their name in the thirteen team competition. The game never reached the heights of the clash the night before with Violet Town running out easy winners kicking 30.13.193 to Longwood’s 5.5.35.

Shadows stretch across the ground in the final quarter.
However the pies from the ground’s kiosk made up for a  little of the disappointment at the game’s outcome and Killing Heidi blaring from my car’s tape-deck made me feel at home. As the shadows stretched across the oval and Violet Town kicked another of their eleven last-quarter goals, i thought of ‘Buddy’ Franklin and the ‘hands-in-the-back’ rule. The Longwood defenders had been struggling to get near their opponents let alone give away free kicks.
